The Land Beyond the Land of the People

"The main feature of the Alert crest is the head of a muskox, a suitably northern animal. Behind the muskox is a background of black and yellow, signifying the periods of total darkness and total sunlight experienced at Alert. Below are two peaks denoting the two mountains to the south, Crystal Mountain and Mount Pullen, between which the sun rises in March. Behind them are the white peaks of the Western Mountains. Below the peaks, a blue band between two white wavy lines signifies the Lincoln Sea and the water and ice pack surrounding Ellesmere Island. The crest is encircled by a wreath of gold maple leaves and with the royal crown of Queen Elizabeth II, Sovereign of Canada, on top. On a banner below the crest is the motto 'Inuit Nunangata Ungata' which translates in English to 'The Land Beyond the Land of the People', the age old and very apt Inuit description of Canada's northern Arctic region". La cosa es tan fantástica como real. De tan raro suena como esas antiguas historias de ficción, de reinos lejanos y perdidos. Pero el lugar es Alert, en Nunavut, Canadá. Ya lo presentamos en la primera entrega de Alter Mundi: el lugar permanentemente habitado más septentrional, más cercano al polo norte. Nació como una estación de radio y comunicaciones. Es base militar y tiene aeropuerto y estación meteorológica. CFS (Canadian Forces Station) Alert. Y ese es su blasón.

[*] La principal característica del blasón de Alert es la cabeza del buey almizclero, un animal muy propio del norte. Detrás del buey almizclero hay un fondo en negro y amarillo, que refiere a los períodos de total oscuridad y total luz solar que se viven en Alert. Abajo hay dos cumbres que representan las dos montañas del sur, la montaña Crystal y el monte Pullen, entre los cuales el sol sale en marzo. Detrás de ellos están las cumbres blancas de las Western Mountains (Montañas del Oeste). Debajo de las cumbres, una banda azul entre dos líneas onduladas significa el Mar de Lincoln y el hielo que rodea la Isla de Ellesmere. El blasón está rodeado por una corona de hojas doradas de arce y la corona real de la Reina Elizabeth II, soberana de Canadá, en la parte superior. En un estandarte debajo del blasón está el lema "Inuit Nunangata Ungata", que se traduce al inglés como "The Land Beyond the Land of the People” (La tierra más allá de la Tierra de la Gente), la antigua descripción inuit de la región ártica del norte de Canadá.
